water for elephants.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

Thoughts:The book starts off with 90 (or is it 93?) year old Jacob.

From the moment I started reading it, I really enjoyed it. Although it took me a few weeks to actually finish it, it wasn't because it was no good, but because of lack of time. I did really love this book.

The story goes from the past to the present every few chapters, and Gruen's writing style makes this transition between times easy to follow. It adds more depth to the story, as well as a making the reader curious to learn more. I was happily surprised with the ending, and the way the story led up to it was very nicely done.

There are many different things going on throughout the book, and the characters are so well described and their feelings so well drawn up, that it kept me coming back for more.
I did hear a few complaints about the animal cruelty that is written in this book, but although I in no way support it, I think it makes the story a lot more realistic. I must admit though, those scenes were a bit tough to read.

Overall, I thought this book was really well written, a really great and unique story and setting, as well as greatly detailed characters. I would recommend this to older young adults and adults who enjoy fiction.

on my wishlist two.

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme hosted by Book Chick City.
It's all about sharing what books you're wishing for, and who doesn't have plenty of those?
To join in on the fun, head on over to Book Chick City's blog.

Last week after I posted my On My Wishlist post, I was contacted by the author of How To Kill a Rockstar and she offered me a copy of her book! I'm so excited! I'll be getting it towards the end of this month or early Dec. I was just so happy and I wanted to share you guys my news :)
Also, yesterday, I couldn't avoid staying away from a bookstore any longer, so I went to Borders and I got the other book on my wishlist! How to Say Goodbye in Robot is now sitting on my shelf. And you know what else? I got it for less than three bucks. Yep. How, you may ask? Well you know how Borders has that one reward card...well if you sign up for it (its completely free btw) you can get coupons through email, so I used my 30% off coupon, and I had $10 worth of Border Bucks saved up :) So yeah, how cool is that...
i get nothing for mentioning Borders, i just think they're pretty cool.
Sorry for ranting...
Anyways, on to my wishlist for the week:

Wings

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.
Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.
In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Earlier this week, I asked a fellow blogger to recommend me a good book to read about fairies, because I've never read one, and I want to start off somewhere good. She recommended this one, and it sounds really good, so I can't wait to actually get it.

The Phantom of the Opera

When the new managers of the Paris Opera House ignore their predecessors' warnings about the hideous 'Opera ghost' stalking the theatre, it is a fatal mistake. Tortured by unrequited love for the beautiful young singer Christine Daae, the mysterious figure living in the depths beneath them has been awaiting his chance to strike. And when Christine suddenly disappears after a triumphant singing performance, it becomes clear that the phantom's time has come. Filled with colour and theatrical spectacle, this thrilling Gothic tale has enthralled readers with its mystery, eerie suspense and tragic story of love turned into deadly obsession

I've only seen the latest Phantom of the Opera movie, and I loved it. I think it's a great story, and it even scares me a bit, so I really want to read this.

so yeah. new layout.

So I jumped the gun and I put up my winter/christmas layout up already :)
I just really like it and couldn't help myself.
And December is right around the corner anyways.
